You can make just about any beautiful, decorative box into a lovely storage unit for your rings simply by supplementing the interior slightly to make it safe for jewelry. Trace the outline of the box onto the velvet and the foam sheet. When tracing onto the foam sheet, use the black marker to mark on the foam. When tracing onto the velvet, use the box as a guide, but draw the actual shape of the box about 2 inches away from the edges of the box itself. In both cases, it is fine to mark on the media because you will be cutting off or covering up the marks. Draw on the back of the velvet so that the marks show up better.

Cut out the foam piece and the matching, larger velvet piece. Cut just inside the marker line for the foam piece, and directly on the pencil line for the velvet. Make your cuts as smooth as possible.

Make sure that the foam piece fits in the box. Once the foam piece has been completely cut out, it should fit snugly in the bottom of the decorative box. If it bends or bows in places, trim it a little more.

Encase the foam in the velvet. Lay lines of tacky glue across the top of the foam piece. Press the velvet down so that the smooth, non-fuzzy side is stuck to the foam. Hold the velvet in place for about 20 seconds while the glue dries. Working your way around the edge of the foam piece, glue the excess fabric down around the edge of the foam piece using liberal amounts of glue and allowing the fabric to set before moving on. You will lastly either trim off the excess fabric so that the bottom of the piece of foam and the fabric ends are all flush with each other, or you can glue any hanging fabric down to the bottom of the foam piece.

Fit the velvet lining into the decorative box. You can simply push it in, or if you like, you can glue it down.

Slice ring slots in the velvet-covered foam. Use the scalpel. The slots should be about 3/4 inch to 1 inch long. If the box is small, you may only wish to make one slot. If it is a large box that you want to hold a lot of rings, then make many slots. However, make sure that they are at least 1 inch apart from each other lengthwise and 2 inches from each other widthwise.
