Choosing the Perfect Jewelry Box for Necklaces

1) Choose your style

Choose a jewelry box that is a “descriptor” of what is inside. For instance, if I like old-fashioned jewelry, then I’ll choose a jewelry box that says so. It will probably be made out of mahogany and will have some type of guilding. If I like designer jewelry, I’ll choose a box that is more free-form and non-conservative. This not only speaks about your jewelry style but also about what kind of jewelry you have inside. The design of the box is also important for the other factors you will have to consider (below). Boxes that only have drawers are usually made for jewelry other than necklaces. Boxes that are taller (see below) are usually specifically made for necklaces.

2) Keep it safe

Pick a jewelry box that is smart. In other words, don’t choose a jewelry box that says, “I’m a jewelry box! Open me!” In fact, I like jewelry boxes that have faux drawers; this feature has saved my jewelry at least once so far. Pick out a design that is less flashy and something that blends in with the other furniture and objects in the room. This makes it the least desirable target, at least at first glance. There are some jewelry boxes that do have locks on them. I find these a bit repetitive since a safe would probably do a better job.

3) Taller is better

When it comes to necklaces, you will want to purchase a jewelry box that has plenty of height. Most jewelry boxes that are specifically designed for necklaces will be tall because they will have hooks attached to the box’s ceiling for hanging necklaces on. This is more convenient than placing necklaces horizontally because they won’t tangle. There are some jewelry boxes that have rotating hooks, much like an outdoor clothes line (“umbrella”) would look but smaller. This is an even better feature because you won’t have to dig around to the back of the jewelry box.

4) Keep it simple

When you keep your choice simple, you’ll find that it won’t be too expensive. I purchased a mahogany jewelry box almost a decade ago for less than $75 and it’s still my favorite little piece of furniture today. But, if you decide that a more expensive box is right for you and you can’t find it cheaper elsewhere, then go for it. A beautiful jewelry box is a wonderful investment that you’re likely to keep for a long time.
