Tangled chains and missing earrings! Scattering your jewelry around your countertop or in a drawer means trouble. Make your own jewelry organizer from simple materials and never worry about damage or loss again.
Use a ruler to measure a piece of craft foam board to your desired size. A good size for a jewelry organizer is approximately 9 by 12 inches, but you can craft one in any size you need to hold your jewelry collection. Cut two rectangles that are the same size using a very sharp craft knife. Next, cut a rectangle out of the center of each so the pieces look like a picture frame.
Lay the foam board rectangles on a piece of felt fabric, or other type of soft fabric, and use a pencil to draw around each one. Leave approximately 1 inch on all sides of the foam board so you can wrap the fabric around the foam. Cut the felt using your scissors. Also cut diagonal lines at each inside and outside corner of the felt to allow it to lay flat on the foam board.
Glue the felt fabric to the front of one piece of foam board. Fold the inside edge of the fabric around both pieces of foam board and glue it to the back. Do the same for the outer edge. Do not use excessive amounts of glue as this may get in the way of being able to hang earrings or other jewelry on the jewelry organizer frame.
Cut a length of the organza ribbon or flat lace long enough to go from one edge of the jewelry organizer frame to the other. Use your hot glue gun or craft glue to attach the ends of it to either side of the back of the frame. This should be done at the top edge of the opening in the center of the jewelry organizer. This trim of ribbon or lace will be used for stud and post earrings.
Use wire snips to make two or three pieces of picture wire long enough to reach and from side to side of the jewelry organizer frame. Coat each end with hot glue or craft glue and push it through the felt fabric between the pieces of foam board. You can make a hole with a pin to make it easier to position the wires. These wires will be useful for hanging hook hearings and bracelets with a clasps.
Poke holes through the bottom edge of the jewelry organizer frame with the tip of the scissors or other sharp tool. Attach the small hooks (and their bolts) to the frame in these holes. These hooks can be used for necklaces and bangle bracelets. Attach a hook at the top of the jewelry organizer frame so you can hang it on your wall or door. Use extra strips of felt fabric to cover the back side of the jewelry organizer frame. This will make it neater and protect your wall or furniture from scratches from the bolts. |
